Frequently Asked Questions

A bit about Hemp

What is Hemp used for?

When referring to Hemp, we are referring to varieties of the Cannabis Sativa plant with a Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) level less than 0.3% and therefore very different to other varieties of the plant which may be high in THC and as a result, may have a psychoactive impact.

Hemp is extremely versatile and can be used to make everything from industrial products to clothing, paper, bioplastics, biofuel, cosmetics and hemp oil (including hemp seed oil and cannabidiol oil (CBD oil).

Hemp is generally low in THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and is jam packed with nutrient dense seeds., flowers and leaves. Although it is a part of the cannabis family, hemp is completely legal to consume in Australia. Being low in THC means hemp does not have psychoactive impacts.

Why Hemp?

We wanted to bring you products that are both good for you and kinder to the earth.

Hemp is renewable and fast growing. Hemp as a crop can mature in about 100 days and harvested multiple times per year. As a crop, it can yield up to 250% more fibre in the same amount of land when compared to cotton.

Hemp is also 100% biodegradable and can sequester carbon from the atmosphere as it grows. As a natural weed suppressor, growing a crop of hemp requires no herbicides or fungicides and so is far kinder on the earth.

Where do your hemp additives come from?

Australia! We only use Australian-grown and manufactured Hemp seed oil and work with our lab and suppliers to ensure we produce the highest quality Hemp products.

Hemp fabrics: At this time, our hemp fabrics are sourced overseas. Where possible, we undertake manufacturing here in Australia to ensure quality. We are constantly looking to partner with new suppliers here in Australia to bring more of our work on to home soil and we imagine this will be possible as the industry grows.

How is Hemp seed different to CBD oil?

Hemp Seed is made from the seeds of the hemp plant as opposed to CBD Oil which is made from the leaves and stalk of the hemp plant. Hemp Seed Oil contains less than 0.0075% (75mg/kg) of CBD and doesn't contain any of the benefits associated with CBD. Hemp Seed is the primary additive to our cosmetic products.

What are the benefits of Hemp Seed?

Hemp contains the ideal ratio of the essential fatty acids, omega 3, 6 and 9. Research has shown that these nutrients assist in reducing inflammation in the body and have helped treat skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis and acne) and rheumatoid arthritis. Applying it to your skin can help reduce redness, lock in moisture and improve both texture and tone, particularly if you have been out in the Australian elements.

How do you package your products?

At Asa & Co we go one step further in minimising our impact on the earth while still ensuring your products arrive sound and in style.

To do this we have removed plastic from the equation, opting for recyclable and/or biodegradable alternatives.

Even our post satchels and labels are biodegradable!
